Project Description: Nixa Public Schools spokesman Zac Rantz said the addition, which includes a wrestling and weight room, is funded by $9.5 million in bonds issued last year. The Federal Emergency Management Agency safe room is designed to withstand EF5 tornadoes, and he said it would be open to the public during tornado watches and warnings. FEMA is covering 75 percent of the cost of the shelter, Rantz said. The addition comes two years after expansions to the junior high and high school, which cost $6.5 million combined and were paid funded by general obligation bonds, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.
