Description: The Heritage Cafeteria at the corner of Battlefield Road and Fremont Avenue was a mainstay for Springfield diners for 56 years until its closure in 2016. Rising on its 2.3-acre site is Heritage Flats, a five-story mixed-use development with 6,350 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. Above the business spaces are four stories of apartments, 95 units in all, ranging from studios to three-bedroom units. Plans call for indoor and outdoor rooftop lounges, plus covered parking, an outdoor pool and a dog-walking area, according to design officials at Buf Studio. The design features wood and stone elements that might be familiar to those who frequented the cafeteria, the architects note. General contractor O’Reilly Build officials say the property acquisition included a four-business strip center south of the building, and the apartments will be managed by TLC Properties. A representative of TLC said rental rates have not yet been set.
