Project description: The Greene County Commission is moving the sheriff’s office and county jail to 20 acres south of the Springfield-Branson National Airport. Officials have cited jail overcrowding for years, and the new facility will be able to house 1,244 inmates, up from 709 currently. Additionally with the move, most of the sheriff’s office operations will combine in one campus, officials say. According to past Springfield Business Journal reporting, the county purchased the land, at Division Street and Haseltine Road, for $679,545 from SCI Missouri Funeral Services Inc. According to county Budget Officer Jeff Scott, county commissioners have approved a $150 million project budget, with over $60 million coming from municipal bond proceeds and $3.65 million from general revenues. The remainder is expected to come from additional bonds. County officials expect the new jail would result in staffing cost savings of $95 million from operational efficiencies over the next 20 years.
