A free seminar titled "Unlocking The Mysteries of Investing," will be held 7-9 p.m. Oct. 6 in the meeting room of the Church of Christ at 3721 E. Sunshine. The seminar is sponsored by the Regional Council of the National Association of Investors Corporation, which includes southwest Missouri and northern Arkansas.|ret||ret||tab|

The two-hour session will be led by Joyce Bearden and Gene Robison, both members of the local NAIC council. No pre-registration is required for the seminar. |ret||ret||tab|

"The seminar will teach you how to settle your personal finances, the miracle of compounding (not touching your money so that it grows), planning and setting your goals, determining your investment style, learning how to pick a stockbroker, how to gather information, investment terminology, how to do a fundamental analysis and dividend reinvestment plans," Bearden said.|ret||ret||tab|

She has been involved with the local NAIC council since it began about five years ago. "I attended a group meeting and was thrilled to learn that their purpose was education and not trying to sell a stock," Bearden said.|ret||ret||tab|

She, along with 10 other members of the local NAIC council, are trained by the national organization to conduct the seminars.|ret||ret||tab|

"The national organization has guidelines we must follow in order to teach," Bearden said. "But we all look at this as an opportunity to do community service."|ret||ret||tab|

The council will offer additional seminars, for a fee, in the months following "Unlocking The Mysteries of Investing."|ret||ret||tab|

The next seminar, scheduled for Oct. 13, is titled "Tools For Beginning Investors" and runs 7-9 p.m. at the Library Center on South Campbell. The cost is $30 and pre-registration is required. Call 883-6669.|ret||ret||tab|

Sydney McAdoo handles promotions and public relations for the local chapter of the NAIC. She said the purpose of the chapter is to "teach people how to successfully invest."|ret||ret||tab|

"Every person who makes any money at all should be learning how to invest," McAdoo said. "Before I became a member of the council, I'd been using a broker. The information you learn from these seminars helps you learn how to control your own destiny whether you've got a broker or not."|ret||ret||tab|

She said the council also helps people learn how to start investment clubs. |ret||ret||tab|

"We can help them learn," she said. "Now that I know what I'm doing, I can ask a broker better questions. I have so much more control."|ret||ret||tab|

There are 139 investment clubs in the regional council.|ret||ret||tab|

The national NAIC has its headquarters in Royal Oak, Mich. Its vision, according to materials provided by NAIC, is "to build a nation of individual investors." Its mission is "to provide a program of sound investment information, education and support that helps create successful lifetime investors." |ret||ret||tab|
