France fines Microsoft $64M

France's privacy watchdog announced it would fine Microsoft to the tune of $64 million.

The country's National Commission for Technology and Freedoms has alleged Microsoft's search engine Bing was not set up to allow users to refuse cookies as simply as accepting them.

Officials with the regulator found that "when users visited this site, cookies were deposited on their terminal without their consent, while these cookies were used, among others, for advertising purposes."
