Four new elements added to the periodic table

Posted online
With working names such as ununseptium and ununtrium, four new elements have been added to the periodic table, NPR reports.

Citing the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, NPR reports the elements with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118 have permanent names in the works.

The additions come nearly five years after flerovium, No. 114, and livermorium, No. 116, joined the table.

The new elements were discovered in recent years by researchers in Japan, Russia and the U.S. Element 113 is said to be the first on the periodic table found in Asia.

The new “superheavy” elements were created by using particle accelerators to shoot beams of nuclei at other, heavier, target nuclei, according to the report.
