Former Springfield mayor dies

N.L. “Mac” McCartney was Springfield's mayor 1993-95.

Former Springfield Mayor N.L. “Mac” McCartney died Nov. 18. He was 99.

McCartney was a City Council member 1987-1993 and mayor 1993-95, according to a news release from the city announcing his death.

"On top of all else, Mac was a kind and caring, soft-spoken person," Mayor Ken McClure said in the release. "He served the community well throughout many decades as a volunteer and businessman."

As mayor, McCartney created Springfield Art Museum Day on Oct. 28, 1994, when the Jeannette L. Musgrave Wing of the museum was dedicated.

He was involved in the community as president of the Southeast Rotary Club and district governor of Rotary International, and he served as board chair for the ARC Foundation, City Utilities of Springfield, American Red Cross, Boys and Girls Town of Missouri, Visiting Nurse Association and Foundation, and Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Foundation, according to the release.

A decorated veteran, McCartney retired in 1972 as a U.S. Army colonel after 30 years of service.
