Former SBC co-owner to open pizza shop

At Southern Hills Shopping Center, it’s out with Panera Bread and in with a newly created pizza concept.

Bryan Bevel, former co-owner of Springfield Brewing Co., plans a mid- to late-March opening for The Pitch Pizza & Pub at 2924 E. Sunshine St. Bevel’s plans were first reported by 417 Magazine.

Bevel said this morning he formed Clancy’s Adventure LLC — named after one of his pets — to operate The Pitch.

“I wanted a social place that you could go to that didn’t feel like a country club,” he said. “East Springfield is starting to really blossom with independently owned restaurants, and I wanted to be a part of that theme.”

Bevel signed a five-year lease with Southern Hills Shopping Center for undisclosed terms. The Wooten Co. LLC, which owns the majority of Southern Hills, lists available space at the center for $9 per square foot. Developer Curtis Jared owns the far west side of the center, according to Greene County assessor records.

Bevel said the 15-employee, 150-seat restaurant would make its own dough daily, as well as serve fresh salmon, handmade pasta and smoked meats. Bevel plans to offer local and regional beers on tap, including those made by his former venture SBC. The Pitch also would have a 100-seat banquet space, which Bevel said would fill a need on the east side.

The space housed a Panera Bread restaurant until Jan. 12. Panera franchisee Traditional Bakery Inc. scheduled a grand opening today for its new 5,000-square-foot shop at 2641 E. Sunshine St.

Bevel said all of Panera’s remaining equipment should be out of Southern Hills within the next week, after which infill work would begin for The Pitch. He declined to disclose his planned investment in the restaurant being designed by Esterly, Schneider and Associates Inc.

“We’ve spent over three months on menu development. Now, we’re focusing on the infill,” he said.

Bevel, one of six investors who purchased SBC in 2011 from Paul Mueller Co., sold his stake in the company this fall. This morning, he declined to say how much he received for his stake.
