Missouri State University's fifth president has died.
Arthur Mallory died Nov. 20, according to a news release from MSU. He led the university as president 1964-71 and served as its College of Education dean 1988-91.
“Dr. Mallory was someone I had the privilege of knowing, and our conversations always reflected his deep commitment to Missouri State and the people we serve,” MSU President Richard "Biff" Williams said in the release. “His leadership during a challenging time expanded opportunity for students and strengthened the university’s commitment to dialogue and public service."
Mallory's career also included serving as commissioner of education in the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education from 1971-87.
At MSU, Mallory is credited in the release with leading the university to 130% enrollment growth, with 9,930 students at the conclusion of his tenure as president; construction of facilities including Greenwood Laboratory School, Craig Hall and Temple Hall; the addition of graduate programs; and the expansion of the school's physical campus to 60 acres from 38.
Workforce housing essential throughout region, chamber officials say.
