Former House Speaker Hastert intends to plead guilty

Posted online
An attorney for former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert told a federal judge Thursday that Hastert intends to plead guilty in a hush-money case linked to decades-old allegations of sexual misconduct.

Attorney John Gallo, who asked the judge to set a date for change of plea, said during a brief hearing he expects to have a written plea agreement by Monday. The judge scheduled to an Oct. 28 hearing.

The attorney did not share any of the terms, including what counts Hastert would plead guilty to and any possible sentence.

The 73-year-old Illinois Republican is charged with breaking banking laws and lying to the federal investigators in efforts to pay someone $3.5 million to hide allegations of previous, unspecified misconduct.
