Posted online

Former City Utilities of Springfield General Manager Robert Roundtree died yesterday in his hometown of Gainesville, Florida. He was 93.

Roundtree worked as general manager of CU from 1983 through 2002, when he was succeeded by John Twitty, according to a news release. Twitty was succeeded in 2011 by current General Manager Scott Miller.

“Mr. Roundtree was a giant in our industry,” said Twitty, who’s now executive director of the Transmission Access Policy Study Group, in the release. “His service to the customers of City Utilities was significant and eventful and many of the benefits those customers enjoy today are a result of his leadership.”

During his 19-year tenure, Roundtree is credited with partnering to develop:
• a second natural gas transmission line to Springfield;
• the Stockton Water Supply pipeline;
• Partnership Industrial Center;
• Watershed Committee of the Ozarks;
• SpringNet Broadband; and
• the Springfield-Greene County trunked radio system.

The American Public Power Association annually recognizes his achievements with the awarding of the Robert E. Roundtree Rising Star recognition. Before coming to CU, Roundtree started working in 1948 at power plants for Gainesville Regional Utilities, where he retired as CEO 30 years later. He had stints in Brownsville, Texas, and Dalton, Georgia, as general manager for power utilities before coming to Springfield, according to the release.

Mr.Roundtree was indeed a great asset to City Utilities and the Springfield region. He was a most selfless man. He never sought recognition for himself or the utility. What was best for our region was always best for any single man or business. He was a delight to work with when I was on city council. I knew him and his wife Alice from church and only knew Bob as , "he works for city utilities," . Our world lost a great man.
