Banta was a Missouri State University graduate and a naval fighter pilot in World War II. In 1945, he married into the Jezzard family, which owned what was then called W.H. Jezzard & Sons.
Banta began working at the company, making his way up to general manager, and in 1962 bought the business. In 1984, he changed its name to Banta Foods. Now under the leadership of Banta’s son Chuck, the food-service company distributes within a 300-mile radius of Springfield.
Banta Foods will be honored as one of Springfield Business Journal’s Dynamic Dozen on March 8; the company has been an honoree twice before for its fast revenue growth.
A memorial service and funeral for Banta were held Wednesday.
