The first hotel company that John Q. Hammons started and that still has his name attached continues to be active in the real estate industry.
Cincinnati-based Winegardner & Hammons Inc. Hotels and Resorts purchased two properties in the Dayton, Ohio, area for a combined $8.6 million, according to Greene County (Ohio) property records.
Hammons, who died earlier this year at age 94, started Winegardner & Hammons Inc. with former plumber Roy Winegardner in 1958 to begin purchasing properties under the Holiday Inn franchise.
Winegardner & Hammons Inc. started with 10 Holiday Inn properties and would construct nearly three dozen Holiday Inns before Hammons formed John Q. Hammons Hotels in 1969. Hammons went on to develop more than 200 hotel properties in 40 states throughout his 50-plus year career in the lodging industry.
In the latest deal, Winegardner & Hammons Inc., now led by CEO J. Erik Kamfjord, acquired a Holiday Inn and a Homewood Suites by Hilton, according to the Dayton Business Journal.
