Ford may make cars out of Heinz ketchup

Posted online
What can you make out of leftover tomato peels, stems and seeds? Potentially a car cupholder.

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) and H. J. Heinz Co. (NYSE: HNZ) are working together to develop a way to make car parts out of ketchup by-products.

According to a report by CNNMoney, Heinz uses more than 2 million tons of tomatoes every year. The by-products are shipped to Ford facilities, where they are processed into small, dry pellets that can be used in manufacturing. One possible application could be making wiring brackets or interior compartments, such as cupholders.

The Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker already partners with Proctor & Gamble Co. (NYSE: PG) and Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO). Ford manufactures seat cushions, seat backs, head restraints and door panel inserts out of fabric made using Coca-Cola plastic.
