Ford began production of its commercial Transit van Wednesday at the Claycomo plant. According to the Kansas City Star, Ford recently invested $1.1 billion in the plant to prepare for the new production. The plant added 900 jobs and will create 300 Transits a day, Ford officials said.
The Transit is a popular commercial van in Europe, but it’s new to North America. The commercial van will replace the E-series vans, a top-selling commercial van in the United States. The Transit has a list price starting of $29,000.
“We see a bright future for the Kansas City assembly plant,” Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president of the Americas, told the Kansas City Star.
The company plans to add a second shift of 800 to 1,000 employees to build Transit vans at the Claycomo plant later in the year.
