A floral business is poised to open in the same Rountree neighborhood space where a now-shuttered flower shop planned to relocate last year.
Fleur Floral Studio co-owner Rose Cochran is planning a Feb. 1 opening for the shop at 1423 E. Cherry St., Ste. 101. She said it’s a first-time business venture for herself and her husband, Garrett Cochran.
“I wanted to be where there was hustle and bustle, but not get lost in a strip mall,” Rose Cochran said of possible spots in town for the shop, noting downtown was seriously considered.
Cochran said a friend notified her of available space in Rountree, which held memories for the couple as they frequently walked in the neighborhood when dating a few years ago.
“It’s a great location but also kind of special to us,” she said.
Startup costs are roughly $10,000, she said, adding the couple is on a three-year lease for an undisclosed rate with Pickwick and Cherry LLC.
The Cochrans are in the midst of moving back to Springfield from Bentonville, Arkansas, where they have lived since December 2019. Rose Cochran, a 2019 Missouri State University graduate, said they moved there for her job as a venue manager for 21c Museum Hotel. However, when the coronavirus pandemic hit last spring, events dried up and Cochran said she was among those furloughed.
“That led me to this,” she said. “The job lit that fire in me for weddings and events.”
The three-employee shop will sell floral arrangements and custom balloon garlands for pickup and delivery, as well as weddings and other events, Cochran said. Floral arrangement delivery service will be available with a $45 minimum purchase. Fleur Floral Studio occupies roughly 1,200 square feet in a renovated, nearly century-old Spanish-style mission building for which Ross Construction Group LLC was general contractor.
The shop is next door to Artistree Pottery LLC, an art studio that opened in September.
Fleur Floral Studio is the second flower business with plans to occupy the space in as many years. Greens, a full-service flower shop, announced its intentions in November 2019 to move to Rountree in 2020, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting. However, the company, which shut down during the pandemic, announced on social media in May 2020 it was closing permanently.
Utah-based gourmet cookie chain Crumbl Cookies opened its first Springfield shop; interior design business Branson Upstaging LLC relocated; and Lauren Ashley Dance Center LLC added a second location.
