Rule No. 1 is to build trust between supervisors and subordinates, said Hoeffner, president of Personnel Dynamics Consulting in St. Lucie County, Fla. Hoeffner, who is the featured speaker at an April 17 program sponsored by the Springfield Area Human Resources Association, said employees appreciate bosses who are transparent and truthful about what’s going on in the workplace.
“Today’s worker is just so much brighter and their expectations are so much higher; being kept in the dark is an insult,” he said. “And as we all know, people don’t leave their jobs, they leave their supervisors.”
Minimizing turnover is another rule, Hoeffner said, adding that most employers would be stunned to see the dollar figure attached to churn – the formula for which he’ll explain at the conference. Investing in training and development is vital for any company interested in retaining talented and productive workers, he said.
“Any employer who is not training and developing their employees … those employees need to leave because they’re losing market value,” Hoeffner said.
Hoeffner also plans to share some tips for luring content employees away from rival employers – a difficult feat that he says is possible if a supervisor cultivates the right relationships to beat competitors to the punch.
Jennifer Schofield, professional development chairwoman for SAHRA, said she’s hopeful HR professionals and managers who attend Hoeffner’s presentation will walk away with useful information about modern-day recruitment and retention practices.
Schofield said tickets to the April 17 event are $35 for association members and $50 for others. The event is 11:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel, 2431 N. Glenstone Ave., and lunch is provided. For more information or to RSVP, contact Schofield at (417) 864-1428.[[In-content Ad]]
