Five City Council seats up for election in 2009

Posted online
Starting Monday morning, candidates running next year for open seats on Springfield City Council can obtain applications and petitions for filing from the city clerk’s office.

Seats up for election are: mayor, currently held by Tom Carlson, who is not running for re-election; General Seat A, currently held by Mary Collette; General Seat B, currently held by Gary Deaver; Zone 1, currently held by Denny Whayne; and Zone 4, currently held by John Wylie.

Filing information also will be made available on the city’s Web site Monday morning; petitions, however, must be obtained in person. Candidates must file between Oct. 7 and Nov. 18 during regular office hours.

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

• Be a qualified voter of Springfield;

• Be a Springfield resident for at least two years immediately prior to the election; and

• Be a resident of the respective zone for at least one year if filing for a zone seat.

Petitions for a zone seat must have 100 registered voter signatures from that zone, and petitions for a general seat must have 200 registered voter signatures from within city limits.

If more than two candidates qualify for a position, they will be on the ballot in the Feb. 3 primary election. The two candidates receiving the most votes in that election will be on the April 7 ballot in the regular municipal general election.[[In-content Ad]]
