The Springfield Fire Department on Thursday broke ground on a new fire station.

At the 1900 block of West College Street, the $3.2 million Fire Station 13 is slated for completion in fall 2022, according to a news release. Funding is from the city's level property tax, which was renewed by voters in 2017.

“We are keeping our promise to Springfield voters,” Fire Chief David Pennington said in the release.

DeWitt & Associates Inc. is serving as general contractor for the station designed by Esterly, Schneider & Associates Inc., said city spokesperson Melissa Haase.

The level property tax, which generates $8.5 million annually, also is funding replacements of fire stations 4 and 7 at 2423 N. Delaware Ave. and 2129 E. Sunshine St., respectively, according to the release. Additionally, a brand-new Fire Station 14 at the northeast corner of West Chestnut Expressway and North Duke Avenue is scheduled for construction in 2026, and improvements to Fire Station 10, 2245 E. Galloway St., are underway.
