Mars One wants to land on the red planet by 2024 with the goal of eventually establishing a colony. And despite the first mission’s billing as a one-way trip, hundreds of thousands still are clamoring to book a ticket.
The Dutch nonprofit announced its final 100 candidates Tuesday, narrowing the pool from more than 200,000, with the goal of narrowing even further to a final 24.
CNN reports they hope to launch every two years from 2024, with the aim of building a sustainable colony in stages. However, the planet always has been a difficult target for exploration, with only around half of all unmanned missions succeeding. The journey itself is expected to take around seven months, and a recent MIT study found, should the first explorers succeed in landing, using current technology they would likely survive just 68 days.
