Fifth-generation KC company sells to private equity firm

A family-owned Kansas City company that traces its roots back to 1887 sold to a private equity firm.

El Segundo, California-based Architect Equity LLC bought Faultless Brands, a manufacturer of fabric, fragrance and home care products. Financial terms were undisclosed.

"There are obviously mixed emotions in selling the business," said Cathy Beaham Smith, a fifth-generation owner of the company. "But to me, while it's the end of an era, it's also the beginning of a new one. I think this is the best scenario for preserving and growing the legacy. I'm very happy for the way this all worked out."
