A dawn raid today of several FIFA soccer officials in Switzerland has led to arrests on charges of widespread corruption over the past two decades, involving bids for World Cup sites as well as marketing and broadcast deals, The New York Times reports.
The arrests, described as peaceful, were carried out at an elegant five-star hotel in Zurich. An FBI investigation of soccer’s global governing body undergirds the moves by authorities to extradite the FIFA officials to the United States, according to the Times.
Swiss authorities said they’ve opened criminal cases related to the bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup, and there are accusations FIFA officials paid more than $150 million in bribes and kickbacks in exchange for media deals associated with major soccer tournaments, the Times reported.
FIFA, a multibillion-dollar organization, has been accused of bribery for decades.
