Ferguson's City Council yesterday approved the first reading of a settlement agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice.
In January, the city and the DOJ reached an agreement to resolve a government investigation opened following the police shooting death of Michael Brown in August 2014. The DOJ then took a look at the city's policing and court practices.
Last month, the council approved an agreement with seven amendments, fearing the settlement could cost the city $4 million in the first year and nearly $10 million over the next three years.
The DOJ sued the city following the vote.
In a March 4 letter, the DOJ wrote it would work with the city if the settlement provisions are cost prohibitive.
