It was a historic election night in Ferguson as nearly 30 percent of voters turned out to elect two new African American council members.
The six-member city council now is 50 percent black. The city’s population is about 70 percent black, but the council had been predominantly white.
Supporters of both candidates said after months of upheaval, a new day dawned in Ferguson.
CNN reports Ella Jones screamed when her victory became official late Tuesday night. She won 49.76 percent of the vote.
"Thank you, Ward 1. I love you," an emotional Jones said.
She will become the first black woman ever to sit on the Ferguson council.
Wesley Bell also won the Ward 3 seat with nearly 67 percent of the vote.
