Federal workers stand to lose $1B in wages per week

While the length of the U.S. shutdown is unclear, the estimated 800,000 workers being furloughed stand to lose about $1 billion in wages per week.

The last government shutdown, in 1995, lasted 21 days, according to a CNNMoney report.

Nonessential employees were furloughed without pay starting yesterday morning. Those deemed essential are required to report to work but may not be paid until after the shutdown.
