FBI investigates STL Cardinals for hacking Astros

Posted online
U.S. Justice Department prosecutors and the FBI are investigating front-office officials with the St. Louis Cardinals for hacking into the internal networks of the Houston Astros to steal closely guarded information about player personnel, the New York Times reports.

Authorities have said evidence has come to light that the Cardinals broke into an Astros’ network that housed special databases the team built, compromising proprietary statistics, scouting reports and internal discussions about trades.

The alleged attack against the Astros represents the first known case of corporate espionage by one professional sports team against another. Officials did not say who was the focus of their investigation or whether the Cardinals’ highest-ranking administrators were aware of the hacking or authorized it.
