FBI background checks surge in June

Posted online
Gun purchases are up following last month’s mass shooting in Orlando, Fla., leading to an increase in FBI background checks.

The FBI, which performs a check every time someone tries to purchase a gun from a federally licensed dealer in the United States, conducted 2.1 million background checks in June, a 40 percent jump from 1.5 million in the same month last year.

In the first half of the year, background checks through the federal agency total more than 13.8 million. That puts 2016 on track to beat 2015’s record of over 23 million, according to CNNMoney.
