FBI arrests Volkswagen exec on conspiracy charges

The FBI arrested a Volkswagen executive on conspiracy charges, two people familiar with the matter told The New York Times.

Oliver Schmidt, who between 2014 and March 2015 led Volkswagen’s U.s. regulatory compliance, allegedly conspired to defraud the United States by trying to convince regulators that excess emissions were caused by technical problems rather than by deliberate cheating.

Volkswagen spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan said the company “continues to cooperate with the Department of Justice” but that “it would not be appropriate to comment on any ongoing investigations or to discuss personnel matters.”
