Dr. Anthony Fauci agreed to serve as President-elect Joe Biden's chief medical officer.
He'll continue to hold the role of director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
"There are few public servants in our history who have served as long and as well and with as much distinction (as) Dr. Tony Fauci," said Ronald Klain, Biden's incoming chief of staff.
