Ozark Mountain Consultants is designing roadway improvements for three major intersections at Fort Leonard Wood. Each of the intersection designs involves the replacement of antiquated pre-timed signal systems with fully activated mast-arm type signal systems. The existing signal systems are span-wire type with single signal heads for each direction. The new signal systems will incorporate video detection systems, which will allow for more efficient operation of the signal systems. Several of the intersection improvements will include the addition of turn lanes for added capacity. Located on the fort's main thoroughfares, the intersections experience considerable congestion during peak travel periods. The lane additions, combined with new signals, will allow for improved service during all travel periods. Storm drainage improvements, such as the extension of a double 10-by-15-foot reinforced concrete box culvert at one intersection and the addition of new inlets and piping at another, also are included. OMC is providing an intersection capacity analysis and a roadway safety analysis as part of its services, identifying several long-term improvements. Future pavement additions and capacity improvements have been taken into account and provisions have been made for future construction. The project is scheduled for a spring 2004 construction period, and the estimated cost of the project is $540,000.
