Facebook's autoplay video feature is destroying cellphone bills

Posted online
Was the cellphone bill a bit out of control last month with a maxed out data limit? All those ice bucket challenge videos are only partially to blame. The real culprit may be Facebook.

Specifically, the new autoplay feature on all videos. The social media app's newest feature automatically streams videos in the news feed window as users scroll. Though users may not stop on each video, the app already has downloaded and began to stream the content, using up that precious and expensive smartphone data capacity.

CNNMoney reports the issue was flagged by consumer finance site MoneySavingExpert.com, which said it had seen "many complaints from people who have been stung with data bills after exceeding their monthly allowance and who believe it to be because of Facebook autoplaying videos."

Fortunately, the fix is easy. Users can choose to turn the autoplay feature off in the phone's Facebook settings.
