Facebook removes 1.5M videos of New Zealand attack

Posted online

Facebook announced yesterday it took down 1.5 million videos of a gunman's attack on two New Zealand mosques.

Some 300,000 videos were removed and another 1.2 million were blocked at upload in the first 24 hours following the Friday terrorist attack that left 50 people dead.

"Out of respect for the people affected by this tragedy and the concerns of local authorities, we're also removing all edited versions of the video that do not show graphic content," said Mia Garlick, spokeswoman for Facebook New Zealand.
