Facebook Inc. is adding voice and video calling.
The addition to the company’s main social networking platform is Facebook’s latest effort to enhance its communication features after offering Messenger as a separate app in 2014.
Users in the U.S. will be able to make voice or video calls from the Facebook app starting Aug. 30. Connor Hayes, director of produce management at Messenger, is meant to reduce the need to jump back and forth between Facebook’s main app and its Messenger service. The calling feature is launching as a test.
The move raises concerns that Facebook’s intertwining of services could make it hard to break the company up. Last week, the Federal Trade Commission filed an antitrust lawsuit to try to force Facebook to spin off its Instagram and WhatsApp segments.
