In a highly anticipated move from the Federal Aviation Administration, passengers will now be able to use electronic devices gate to gate in airports for everything except in-air phone calls.
CBS News reports passengers shouldn't expect changes to happen immediately as implementation will vary by airline. Airlines will have to show the FAA how their airplanes meet the new guidelines and that they've updating their flight crew training manuals and rules for stowing devices to reflect the new guidelines.
Previously, all passengers were required to turn off electronic devices while boarding and until given the go from the captain while in flight.
Regulatory authority over phone calls belongs to the Federal Communications Commission, not the FAA, CBS News reports.
