Evidence of HIV found in child said to be cured

The hope for a cure for AIDS received a setback when a child thought to have been cured of HIV is now showing signs of the virus, the New York Times reports.

In March 2013, a baby in Mississippi was reportedly cured by aggressive early treatment of large doses of antiretroviral drugs.

Dr. Hannah B. Gay, the pediatrician who was treating the child at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, told the Times last week the reversal felt “like a punch in the gut.”

According to the Times, only one other person had been considered cured of HIV: Timothy Brown, an adult previously known as the anonymous “Berlin patient,” who had a transplant of blood stem cells to treat his leukemia after his bone marrow was wiped out with drugs and radiation.
