Evangel University Pushing Forward in Online Learning

Posted online

There’s no question that technology has shifted the landscape of higher education.

“Technology has made getting a degree more easily accessible to anyone, anywhere,” said Evangel University president Dr. Mike Rakes. Last spring, Evangel launched EU Online, which offers fully virtual degree and certificate programs. “We recognize the unique needs that face adult students who desire to complete or earn a degree or advance their career while balancing work and family commitments,” Rakes said. “So, we decided to take the learning to them.”

And Rakes knows of what he speaks. When he knew he was going to be named president of Evangel University, he took several online courses in order to be better prepared for the job. “It was the best way to gain the knowledge and insight I needed, and it fit perfectly with my life.”

“Our goal is to help you achieve your goals, both personally and professionally, all while balancing the demands of family, career and your education,” said Dr. Lisa Tyson, dean of the College of Online Learning at Evangel University. To that end, Evangel’s online programs offer flexible scheduling to better fit into already existing schedules of work and family.

Provost and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Jon Spence added that online learning can be a tool for those who may already have an established career but wish to stay up to date and in the know when it comes to performing their best. “Online learning can be an important tool for adding to the job you already have,” said Spence. “We want to make a university education affordable and practical for as many professionals as possible.”

But with all that being said, the traditional college experience isn’t going to disappear anytime soon. “The surroundings still matter to many people,” said Rakes. “While online learning is definitely a tool that everyone can take advantage of, there are always going to be young people leaving high school that want that college experience of attending classes in person, making new friends and networking.”

But for those who may have already had that experience or those who have started families and careers, EU Online offers an accessible alternative. “Online learning just makes getting an education so much easier to fit with anything that happens in your life,” said Tyson. “Flexible course scheduling and our entirely online format allow you to study anytime, anyplace.”

Rakes notes that there is one major thing that sets Evangel apart, and it applies to both online and seated classes. “Students who choose Evangel University can be confident in knowing that the education they receive will come from professors who teach through the lens of a biblical worldview, shielded from the ever-changing whims of current culture,” said Dr. Rakes, noting that everyone is on the same page when it comes to the Spirit-centered mission of the private Christian university.
