Evangel to launch nonprofit major

Posted online
With support from a $45,000 grant, Evangel University is planning a fall semester launch of its nonprofit business and social enterprise major within the college's business department.

The major is set to include six new courses designed to show the differences in the administration of nonprofits versus for-profit organizations, according to a news release.

The new courses are:
  • theory and practice of philanthropy;
  • nonprofit financial management;
  • nonprofit governance and law;
  • volunteer engagement and resource management;
  • nonprofit marketing and promotion; and
  • introduction to social enterprise.
“These courses will dovetail with Evangel’s traditional business curriculum and electives,” said Bernie Dana, chairman of Evangel's business department, in the release. “The new program is designed to enable students to integrate business courses into a wide range of vocational areas such as social work, criminal justice, intercultural studies, digital arts, music or even recreation.”

The program's initial funding is being provided by the Vetter Foundation, which is based in Omaha, Neb.

“I was intrigued when Bernie approached me about how this new business major at Evangel will enable students to apply business concepts to improve the management and promotion of humanitarian, missions and social enterprise endeavors,” said Jack Vetter, co-founder of the foundation, in the release. The private foundation was formed in 1992 in part to support sustainable missions and humanitarian projects.

Dana said the grant, which will be paid in equal installments during a three-year period, would cover the cost of adjunct faculty for the new courses and travel expenses for students to receive field experience.[[In-content Ad]]
