Twila Brown Edwards, Evangel University Department of Theology professor emeritus, died March 25. She was 77.
Edwards taught New Testament, Essential Christianity and Revelations courses at Evangel for more than 20 years. She joined Evangel in 1971 as secretary to President J. Robert Ashcroft and Dean Ward Williams. She joined the Evangel Department of Biblical Studies and Philosophy in the late 1970s and served as department chairwoman 1981-1985, according to an Evangel news release.
“Twila Edwards was a compassionate counselor, an inspiring and challenging teacher, a champion of the integration of the arts and Christianity, a departmental leader who encouraged every voice to be heard and a loyal friend to many,” Gary Liddle, Evangel Department of Theology chairman, said in the release.
Edwards' scholarly pursuits focused on the works of C.S. Lewis and the role of women in the Bible.
Edwards also served as a counselor, public speaker, preacher and author. At Evangel Temple, she served as a Sunday school teacher, committee member and Bible quiz coach. Edwards and her husband, James, created the Reading Group, a group that meets biweekly to read and discuss literature.
Edwards earned an undergraduate degree from Central Bible College in 1959, a bachelor's degree from Evangel in 1961, a master's degree from Missouri State University in 1976, and another master's degree from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in 1979, the release said.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, James Edwards; son and daughter-in-law Craig and Tuesday Edwards; and two grandchildren, Vincent and Madeleine.
