Evangel football players earn honors

Six Evangel University football players were named to the 2002 Football Gazette NAIA preseason all-American teams, according to an announcement from the university. |ret||ret||tab|

Senior offensive lineman Donald Smith and senior defensive lineman Justin Coon are first-team members. Junior quarterback Brett Mitchell, senior linebacker Aaron Moore and sophomore placekicker David Peppelman are on the second team. Senior offensive lineman Joe Eader is on the third team.|ret||ret||tab|

Evangel, which finished its 2001 season with an 11-1 record and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NAIA playoffs, won the Heart of America conference championship with a 10-0 record. |ret||ret||tab|

On the 2002 NAIA preseason poll, the team was ranked No. 5 in the nation. Under the direction of first-year head coach Scott Metcalf, the Crusaders kicked off their 2002 season Sept. 7 against Baker University.|ret||ret||tab|
