Europe's huge stock exchange merger is dead

The European Commission ruled Wednesday against a large stock exchange merger.

In blocking the deal between the London Stock Exchange and Deutsche Boerse, the commission said the merger "would have created a de facto monopoly."

The effort by the stock markets is the latest of multiple attempts to combine.
