Ethanol leaks into Mississippi River after Iowa train wreck

Posted online
A train that went off the tracks in eastern Iowa Wednesday has leaked ethanol into the Mississippi River, The Associated Press reported Thursday. Eight of the 14 derailed Canadian Pacific cars carrying ethanol were leaking, but railroad officials said it was unclear how much of the corn-based fuel made it to the river.

The accident happened in a remote location about 10 miles north of Dubuque, Iowa. Authorities reported that three cars caught fire and three others fell into the Mississippi.

According to The Associated Press, state and federal environmental agencies were working with the company to establish ethanol-monitoring sites downstream. No injuries were reported in connection with the derailment.
