Federal regulators said Monday they’ll ease emissions standards for cars and trucks, citing a timeline put in place by President Barack Obama as inappropriate and standards as “too high.”
After completing a review for standards of vehicles manufactured in 2022-2025, the Environmental Protection Agency said revised standards would be forthcoming. Current EPA regulations require new vehicles by 2025 to get 36 miles per gallon, or about 10 mpg over the existing standard.
Automakers applauded the decision, citing cost concerns in developing the necessary technology, while environmentalists warned the proposed rollbacks would make cars more expensive to fill up.
