A month before a measure that would require the labeling of genetically modified foods hits the ballot in Washington state, environmental groups are asking St. Louis-based Monsanto to keep out of the fight, according to reports by St. Louis Business Journal and Reuters.
As You Sow, a shareholder advocacy group for environmental and social causes, and Green Century Capital Management, a manager of environmentally focused mutual funds, are threatening to file shareholder resolutions to prevent companies such as Monsanto from taking part in advocacy about GM labeling.
Monsanto already has donated $4.8 million to the effort to oppose the state referendum.
