Olsson Associates is preparing construction plans for improvements to Doling Park for the city of Springfield. The project addresses shoreline erosion and poor water quality for the pond in the historic park. The outlet structure is aging and beginning to fail, with cracks and seeps in the perimeter wall that prevent the pond from staying full during winter. The design includes geese management practices, historic rock wall repairs and additions, a wetland area, natural channel improvements, and pedestrian walkway and bridge crossings to provide a fully paved route around the pond. Several options were investigated for installing a lake membrane to help limit the leakage. This option will be included in the project as an alternate bid, along with lake aeration fountains. The project, with an estimated cost of less than $1 million, is scheduled for completion later this year. A general contractor has not yet been selected.
