End of Wright Amendment opens flying at Dallas' Love Field

Posted online
Monday marks the end of the Wright Amendment, a federal law which has limited long-distance travel at Dallas Love Field for 34 years. With the close of the law, which was designed to protect Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport by limiting flights out of Love Field to destinations in Texas and adjacent states, a flurry of new flying options are open to travelers.

Beginning today, Dallas-based Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) has added 22 nonstop destinations to seven new cities and cut 18 departures within the Wright Amendment area, netting the carrier an increase in flying out of the airport by about 30 percent. Virgin American now has six destinations instead of three, and United Airlines plans to add new routes in January.

One industry expert said the changes could cut some travel times for customers in half, according to the Dallas Morning News.
