Employers measure workers' waistlines

Fair warning to chubby coworkers: Your employer might be monitoring your waistline as closely as the company's bottom line, and you might get punished for being pudgy.
 
With 70 percent of U.S. adults considered overweight or obese, companies are forced to pay more in health insurance coverage to combat workers' expensive illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. CNNMoney reports more companies are using their wellness plans to penalize as well as incentivize workers to step up their efforts to get healthy.
 
Employers who participate in wellness plans to get or stay healthy are often rewarded with contributions to their health savings accounts, the report states. Those who choose to sit out the participatory health programs, however, could be forced to sign up for a company's higher-deductible insurance plans.
