Joplin-based Empire District Electric Co. filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission for a wind energy project.
The company is proposing to build $1.5 billion worth of wind turbines in southwest Missouri.
“We are pleased to put forward this initiative, which demonstrates an innovative approach to reduce energy costs for our customers, while supporting our region by investing locally,” said Empire President David Swain.
Empire District plans to eventually close its Asbury power plant under the proposal.
