The substation was first energized May 31 to handle increased customer need for energy to meet summer cooling needs. The company said the $1.8 million substation and transmission upgrade is a response to the current and future growth of the Republic area.
“During the last five years, Empire has invested in excess of $8 million in new and upgraded facilities in the Republic area,” said Mike Palmer, Empire’s vice president of commercial operations, in a news release. “These additions will ensure reliable, adequate energy to fuel the community’s continued growth.”
Electrical load in the Republic area in the last five years has grown by roughly nine megawatts. In that same time, Republic has issued 1,067 building permits with a value of $144 million, resulting in annual growth of about 5.5 percent.
Shares of Empire District Electric Co. (NYSE: EDE) closed July 10 at $22.73, compared to a 52-week range of $21.62–$26.13.
