Transforming Infrastructure: Emery Sapp & Sons Drives Springfield’s Economic Expansion

Posted online

Heavy civil contractor Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS) is significantly impacting the burgeoning Southwest Missouri landscape, leveraging a full range of professional services to drive regional economic growth.

The company’s approach to development goes beyond traditional construction, utilizing innovative design-build methodologies that optimize project efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

“We’ve moved from the traditional design-bid-build process to a more integrated approach,” explains Chris Landwehr, Assistant Vice President of Pre-Construction. “By bringing contractors and engineers together early, we can utilize available resources more effectively, ultimately delivering projects more economically.”

ESS employs advanced pre-construction modeling techniques that identify potential challenges before ground is broken. “Our data preparation technicians convert design files and proactively identify potential conflicts,” Landwehr notes. “By addressing these issues early, we can mitigate significant time and cost implications.”
A prime example of this strategic approach is the Buc-ee’s development along Highway 44. ESS transformed a 53,000-square-foot vacant lot into a critical economic catalyst. The company completed 36,000 square yards of concrete work, created a new interchange and roundabout system, and managed comprehensive underground utility installations. ESS quite literally paved the way for continued development in the area.

Springfield’s infrastructure landscape continues to present significant potential. “We’re seeing extensive opportunities in both public and private sectors,” explains Paul Moody, Assistant Vice President of Operations. “The challenge isn’t finding work, but managing the workforce capacity to meet growing infrastructure demands.”

Through deep partnerships with MSU’s Construction Management Program—where ESS leaders serve on the advisory council—ESS is systematically helping build a skilled local workforce and ensuring long-term sustainability of the construction industry. The company’s active participation in the program’s internship initiative has proven highly successful, developing talent at all levels. Ten current employees, including Paul Moody, are former interns.

Technological innovation remains central to ESS’s strategy. From advanced surveying equipment to sophisticated document management systems, the company continually invests in tools that enhance project delivery. These investments enable more precise planning, more efficient execution, and ultimately, more value for clients and the community.

The future of Springfield’s infrastructure development looks promising, with ESS positioned as a critical enabler of regional economic expansion. By combining technological sophistication, strategic workforce development, and a commitment to community growth, the company is not just constructing buildings and roads—it is building the foundation for sustained regional prosperity.
