Elton John's Dolce & Gabbana boycott heats up

Posted online
This week’s social media war of words pits British singer Elton John against Italian fashion designer Stefano Gabbana. Potentially more than just an Internet squabble, the argument uses phrases such as "synthetic children” born from "rented wombs,” and has each side calling for a boycott of the other's work.

CNN reports the argument stems from comments about in-vitro fertilization in Panorama magazine, in which Gabbana and longtime collaborator Domenico Dolce were interviewed.

"No chemical children: life has a natural course, there are things that shouldn't be modified," the pair told the magazine.

John, who has two children with husband David Furnish through IVF, pledged to boycott the Dolce & Gabbana fashion line.

The hashtag #BoycottDolceGabbana was trending Monday morning, sparking other celebrity tweets from people such as Al Roker.

“In spite of what ‪@dolcegabbana think, my beautiful IVF children are not 'synthetic children.' I agree with ‪@eltonjohndotcom,” he tweeted.
